American rapper Young Thug surprised fans on Tuesday night when he proposed to his longtime partner, singer Mariah the Scientist, during a live performance in Atlanta.
The emotional moment unfolded at the Hometown Hero Benefit Concert held at the State Farm Arena on December 16. Midway through his set, Young Thug, whose real name is Jeffery Williams, paused the show and turned his attention to Mariah. As the music faded, the words “Will You Marry Me?” lit up the giant screens behind him in bold pink lettering.
The 34-year-old rapper then pulled out an engagement ring, sending the crowd into loud cheers. Clearly caught off guard and emotional, Mariah addressed the audience moments later, smiling as she said, “I guess I’m getting married.”
The proposal marked a major milestone for the couple, who have been together for over four years after beginning their relationship in 2021.
Their love story, however, did not begin in the spotlight. Young Thug and Mariah the Scientist started dating quietly in late 2021, choosing to keep their relationship largely private. At the time, their connection was more familiar to fans and industry circles than to tabloids, as they avoided constant public appearances or heavy social media displays of affection.
That privacy began to shift in 2022 when Young Thug was arrested in connection with the YSL RICO case. During his incarceration, Mariah stood firmly by his side, visiting him in jail and publicly acknowledging their relationship. Her loyalty during that period drew widespread attention, and moments of support shared online made their bond increasingly visible to the public.
The relationship later faced intense scrutiny when leaked jail phone calls surfaced online, revealing deeply personal conversations that sparked controversy and public debate. The situation ultimately forced Young Thug to address the matter publicly, pushing their once-guarded relationship fully into the spotlight.
Despite legal battles, media pressure, and public scrutiny, the couple remained together. Their engagement now signals a new chapter, turning a relationship that began quietly and endured very public storms into a moment of celebration, commitment, and hope for the future.
