Nigeria international Joe Aribo looks set to depart Championship side Southampton before the January transfer window closes.

The Saints are actively reshaping their squad ahead of Monday, February 2, as head coach Tonda Eckert seeks to streamline the team and strengthen attacking options. Players who have struggled for consistent playing time this season, including Aribo and Sam Edozie, have been made available for transfer. Both were also part of Southampton’s summer exit plans, which ultimately fell through.

Speaking on the matter, Eckert confirmed that discussions are underway, adding that any move must align with the interests of both the club and the player. He noted that modern transfers often involve multiple stakeholders, making negotiations complex. “Talks that previously stalled are now moving forward positively,” he said.

Aribo has made just seven appearances in the Championship this season, with opportunities at St Mary’s limited. The former Rangers midfielder also missed out on Nigeria’s squad for AFCON 2025 in Morocco, although he was instrumental in helping the Super Eagles reach the final of the 2023 tournament in Côte d’Ivoire.

With negotiations reportedly progressing, a January exit for Aribo appears increasingly likely as Southampton continue to reshape their squad mid-season.
