Lionel Messi’s sister, Maria Sol Messi, has been hospitalised following a serious car accident in Miami, forcing the postponement of her wedding, which was scheduled for early January. The 32-year-old suffered multiple injuries and is now undergoing treatment and rehabilitation.
Family sources have confirmed to local media that while her condition is stable, her recovery will take time. The incident has sparked concern among fans and media across Argentina and beyond.
According to reports from Argentina, the crash occurred when Maria Sol lost control of the vehicle she was driving, hitting a wall. Messi’s mother, Celia Cuccittini, stated that Maria Sol had fainted briefly just moments before the impact. While some accounts mention a pick-up truck being involved, the exact circumstances remain unverified.
Injuries and Medical Update
Maria Sol reportedly sustained spinal fractures, burns, and fractures to her heel and wrist. Her family has stressed that she is “out of danger” but will require an extended period of rehabilitation. Burns, in particular, are proving difficult to treat, adding to the complexity of her recovery. She has since returned to her hometown of Rosario, Argentina, to continue her rehabilitation under medical supervision.
Argentinian journalist Angel de Brito shared updates about her condition, confirming the seriousness of the injuries and the impact on her wedding plans:
“Messi’s sister is okay, she’s out of danger, but I checked with the family because she was supposed to get married in Rosario, Argentina, on January 3, and the wedding has had to be suspended.”
He added that the injuries include burns and displaced vertebrae, noting that recovery from such conditions can be slow.
Further details from her mother, Celia Cuccittini, confirmed that Maria Sol suffered two fractured vertebrae, as well as fractures to her heel and wrist. The crash reportedly occurred after she fainted while driving, causing her to collide with a wall.
Wedding Plans Put On Hold
The accident has forced the couple to delay the wedding. Maria Sol was set to marry Julián “Tuli” Arellano, a member of Inter Miami CF’s under-19 coaching staff, on January 3 in Rosario. Family members have decided to postpone the ceremony until she is fully recovered, with a new date to be announced once her health improves.

Maria Sol, who is a fashion designer and entrepreneur, has largely stayed out of the public eye. She previously worked as a brand manager at The Messi Store, the clothing brand founded by her brother, alongside Virginia Hilfiger, sister of fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger.
While the circumstances of the crash are still being clarified, her family has emphasised that the injuries, though serious, are not life-threatening. Fans and friends continue to send messages of support, wishing Maria Sol a smooth and full recovery as she prepares to one day celebrate her postponed wedding.
