Manchester United’s interim manager Darren Fletcher has opened up about the unexpected opportunity to lead the club, describing it as something he never imagined could happen in his lifetime.
Fletcher was placed in temporary charge following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim, whose 14-month spell at Old Trafford ended after a difficult run of results and internal tensions. The former United midfielder, who currently works as the club’s under-18s coach, faced the media for the first time ahead of United’s upcoming Premier League clash with Burnley.
Speaking honestly about the moment, Fletcher admitted the appointment still feels unreal. He said being trusted to take charge of Manchester United goes far beyond anything he ever dreamed of, even during his playing days at the club. While acknowledging the unusual circumstances surrounding his promotion, he stressed that his focus is firmly on the task ahead.
Fletcher explained that although he did not expect to find himself in this position, he understands the responsibility that comes with it and is determined to give everything to the role. He noted that his priority is to lead the team with pride and professionalism, regardless of how sudden the opportunity came.
Despite reports linking him to a longer-term role, Fletcher was quick to dismiss any talk of becoming the club’s permanent manager. According to him, discussions with the club’s hierarchy have been strictly about preparing the team for the Burnley game, with no conversations about the future beyond that.
Manchester United are expected to appoint a caretaker manager soon, while plans are already in motion to select a permanent replacement for Amorim at the end of the season. Names such as Michael Carrick and former boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer have been mentioned as possible short-term options.
Fletcher, who won five Premier League titles under legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson, acknowledged the high standards associated with the club. He admitted that expectations at Manchester United are always about competing at the very top and winning trophies.
Looking ahead, Fletcher said he wants to build a team that reflects the club’s identity and makes supporters proud. He expressed confidence in the current squad, insisting there is quality and commitment among the players, and that his role is to give them the freedom to perform.
The interim boss also hinted that captain Bruno Fernandes and midfielder Mason Mount could return from injury, offering a boost to a squad stretched by fitness concerns. However, he remained tight-lipped on whether his twin sons, Jack and Tyler, would feature against Burnley.
Manchester United currently sit sixth in the Premier League, three points adrift of fourth place, as Fletcher prepares for his first match in charge.
