Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has accused the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) of abandoning its commitment to pass the controversial anti-LGBTQ+ Bill after using it as a campaign tool to secure electoral victory.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra to mark one year of the Minority’s oversight role in Parliament, Afenyo-Markin described the government’s posture on the bill as an act of political deception, arguing that it reflects hypocrisy and bad faith on the part of the NDC.

According to the Effutu MP, the party vigorously promoted the bill while in opposition, portraying it as urgent and non-negotiable, only to retreat after assuming power. He maintained that the NDC rode public sentiment and moral arguments to electoral success, but has since failed to deliver on its promise.

The Minority Leader contended that the government is deliberately denying Ghanaians a law it once framed as essential to protecting the country’s cultural and religious values. He recalled how the NDC mobilised public opinion and dominated media discussions around the bill, insisting it must be passed without delay.

One year into the current administration, however, the narrative has shifted to broader consultations and possible reformulation of the bill, a move the Minority views as inconsistent with earlier demands.

Afenyo-Markin also accused Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga of deploying procedural tactics to stall the bill’s progress in Parliament, insisting that the delay is intentional rather than administrative.

Beyond the bill itself, the Minority Leader raised concerns over what he described as attempts by the government to introduce sexual rights concepts into school curricula. He noted that official documents bearing ministerial approval had been exposed through the vigilance of the Minority caucus, stressing that such actions could not be dismissed as mere anomalies.

The Minority maintains that it will continue to scrutinize government actions and hold the administration accountable to the promises it made to Ghanaians during the election period.
