Morocco Police Arrest 19 Fans After Chaotic AFCON Final
Morocco police arrested 19 supporters following Sunday night’s chaotic Africa Cup of Nations final between Senegal and Morocco.
According to AFP via RMC Sport, 18 Senegal fans were detained for questioning over alleged acts of hooliganism inside the stadium, while one Algerian national was arrested on suspicion of inciting disorder.
Morocco Police Act After Pitch Invasion Attempts
The arrests came after multiple fans attempted to storm the pitch at Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium during a controversial period that saw Senegal manager Pape Thiaw remove his players from the field in stoppage time over a refereeing decision.
Thiaw now faces a potential lengthy ban despite issuing an apology for his actions. The Moroccan football federation has announced plans to pursue legal action over the incident.
Senegal Win Despite Controversy
Senegal clinched the title with a 1-0 victory over hosts Morocco through Pape Gueye’s extra-time strike.
However, the celebration was marred by a disputed late penalty decision that triggered Senegal’s walkoff protest, causing a temporary suspension and heated confrontations involving match officials.
Following a delay exceeding 15 minutes, the Senegal squad returned to action. Morocco’s Brahim Diaz then squandered the penalty opportunity with an attempted Panenka that former Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy comfortably saved, forcing extra time.
Morocco police maintained security throughout the extended proceedings as tensions remained high.
