Nollywood filmmaker and actor Funke Akindele has once again rewritten the record books, further cementing her status as one of the most influential figures in African cinema.
Her latest film, Behind The Scenes, has officially crossed the ₦2 billion mark at the box office, becoming the first Nollywood film in history to achieve the milestone. The achievement was confirmed on Monday by the film’s distributor, FilmOne Entertainment, which revealed that the movie has grossed ₦2,103,039,706 in ticket sales so far.

In announcing the feat on X, FilmOne described the performance as record-shattering, noting that Behind The Scenes is not only the highest-grossing Nollywood film of all time in Africa, but also the top-grossing Nollywood release in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The distributor hailed the moment as a defining one for the African film industry.
Beyond the film’s commercial success, the milestone places Akindele in another historic position. She has now become the first filmmaker to rank number one at the African box office for three consecutive years, an achievement FilmOne described as unprecedented in the region.
Reacting to the overwhelming support from cinema audiences, the distributor thanked viewers for “believing in the magic of storytelling,” adding that the film’s run represents more than just box office numbers. According to FilmOne, the success reflects a cultural movement powered by audience loyalty, word-of-mouth, and a deep connection with the story being told.
Behind The Scenes stars Scarlet Gomez in the lead role and features an ensemble cast that includes Funke Akindele, Iyabo Ojo, Destiny Etiko, Tobi Bakre, Uche Montana, Uzor Arukwe, Ini Dima-Okojie, Adebowale ‘Mr Macaroni’, Ibrahim Chatta, and Kamo State, alongside several other established and emerging actors.

The record-breaking run adds to Akindele’s already impressive box office legacy. Her previous films include Everybody Loves Jenifa, which J grossed ₦1.88 billion, A Tribe Called Judah with ₦1.4 billion, Omo Ghetto: The Saga at ₦678 million, and Battle on Buka Street, which earned ₦668 million.
With Behind The Scenes, Funke Akindele has not only delivered another commercial triumph but has also reaffirmed her place as Africa’s highest-grossing filmmaker of all time, setting a standard that continues to reshape Nollywood’s global footprint.
