Senegalese football fans rallied to support head coach Pape Thiaw after he was handed a five-match ban and a $100,000 fine by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) following the chaotic Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final against Morocco. However, the coach has politely declined the crowdfunding initiative, urging supporters to channel their generosity toward more urgent causes.

In a heartfelt statement, Thiaw expressed deep gratitude to the Senegalese people for their solidarity. “People of Senegal, my family, your support since the announcement of the sanctions has touched me deeply. Thank you for the love you show me every day,” he wrote. He added, “However, I humbly ask you not to organise fundraising campaigns in my name. While I understand and appreciate this generosity, I encourage you to redirect those funds to help those who truly need them.”

The crowdfunding campaign had been launched online shortly after CAF imposed the sanctions on Thiaw and fined the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) a combined $615,000 for several infractions during the AFCON final. The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) was fined $415,000, while additional fines were issued for various misconducts during the match, including inappropriate behavior of ball boys and attempts to obstruct the VAR process.

The AFCON final, held in Rabat on January 18, 2026, was a dramatic affair. Senegal defeated Morocco 1-0 after extra time, claiming their second Africa Cup of Nations title. Controversy erupted late in regular time when a Senegalese goal was disallowed for a foul, and Morocco was awarded a penalty that they ultimately missed. TV footage captured Thiaw gesturing toward his players, which many interpreted as instructing them to leave the field. Most of the squad temporarily walked off, although star forward Sadio Mane persuaded his teammates to return and continue the match.

CAF described Thiaw’s conduct as “unsporting” and said it brought the game into disrepute, prompting the ban and fine. While some critics supported the sanctions, many Senegalese fans viewed his actions as a passionate defense of his team rather than misconduct. This sparked a wave of social media campaigns and fundraising initiatives aimed at helping the coach cover the fine.

Despite the support, Thiaw’s decision to decline the donations reflects his humility and commitment to social responsibility. His message has resonated widely, with supporters praising his integrity and selflessness.

The five-match ban will affect Thiaw’s participation in upcoming CAF competitions but will not prevent him from leading Senegal at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. As the Teranga Lions prepare for the global tournament, Thiaw’s leadership remains central to the team’s ambitions, and his guidance will be crucial for Senegal’s chances on the world stage.

Fans and football analysts alike have lauded Thiaw’s approach, highlighting his dedication to both his team and the broader Senegalese community. While the AFCON final remains one of the most dramatic and controversial matches in recent African football history, Thiaw’s handling of the aftermath has further cemented his reputation as a respected and principled leader in the sport.
