President Mahama Jets to the UN to Champion Reparatory Justice for Africa

President John Dramani Mahama is leading Ghana’s delegation to the United States today for a powerful mission on reparatory justice and honouring the victims of the transatlantic slave trade.

He leaves Accra this Monday, March 23, 2026, heading to New York and Pennsylvania for what insiders are calling a truly historic visit to push global talks on historical wrongs.Tomorrow at UN Headquarters, the President will deliver the keynote address at a High-Level Special Event themed “Reparatory Justice for the Trafficking of Enslaved Africans and the Racialised Chattel Enslavement of Africans.” World leaders will gather to confront slavery’s painful legacy and the case for reparations.

On Wednesday he’ll speak to the United Nations General Assembly during the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade.

There, Mahama will present Ghana’s strong position – fully backed by the African Union – demanding a landmark resolution that declares the trafficking and racialised enslavement of Africans as the gravest crime against humanity.

The trip opens with a solemn wreath-laying at New York’s African Burial Ground National Monument to pay tribute to those who suffered. He’ll then deliver another keynote at Lincoln University and meet the Ghanaian community at Temple University in Pennsylvania.
