Russian President Vladimir Putin has received an invitation to join US President Donald Trump’s proposed “Board of Peace,” a new body aimed at overseeing the demilitarization and reconstruction of Gaza, the Kremlin confirmed on Monday.
Putin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, said the invitation was delivered through diplomatic channels. “President Putin has received an invitation to join this Board of Peace,” Peskov stated, adding that the Kremlin is reviewing the proposal and awaiting further details from the US. Belarus’ President Alexander Lukashenko also confirmed receiving an invitation, with Minsk welcoming the initiative as a chance to contribute to global peace and a secure future for generations.
Trump Proposes “Board of Peace” for Gaza
The Board of Peace is envisioned as part of a United Nations-backed American initiative to rebuild Gaza following two years of conflict between Israel and Hamas. Trump has described the board as “the greatest and most prestigious board ever assembled,” highlighting its role in reconstruction efforts and international coordination.
Global Leaders Receive Invitations
Reports indicate that the board’s membership will include prominent figures such as former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Israel has also been invited to participate, alongside the presidents and prime ministers of Turkey, Argentina, Egypt, Hungary, and India. According to a US official, members contributing $1 billion will receive permanent seats, while others will serve three-year terms. Funds raised will be dedicated to Gaza’s rebuilding, with assurances to avoid excessive administrative costs.
Controversy and Criticism Surround the Board
The initiative has faced criticism. Ireland’s Foreign Minister Helen McEntee warned the board could overstep its mandate, emphasizing the UN’s role as the primary authority for global peace and security. Observers have questioned the legitimacy of forming such a body outside traditional multilateral institutions.
Russia’s Potential Role in Gaza Reconstruction
Putin’s participation would mark a notable re-engagement in global affairs for Russia, which has been largely isolated internationally since its 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Moscow has maintained limited involvement in the Israel-Hamas conflict, mediating between factions and hosting Palestinian officials. Participation on the Board of Peace would signal a deeper role in the region’s post-conflict reconstruction and humanitarian efforts.
