Rev Charles Owusu Warns Mahama: Fulfill LGBTQ Promises or Face 2028 Election Backlash

A former independent parliamentary candidate for Nkoranza has warned President John Dramani Mahama that Ghanaians will hold him accountable in the 2028 election if he fails to deliver on his campaign promises regarding LGBTQ+ issues.
Rev Charles Owusu, speaking on Peace FM on January 18, 2026, said the conversations and commitments made during the campaign trail are now looking different from what’s being delivered in office.

“If President Mahama fails to fulfill his promise on the LGBTQ+ issues, we will show him in 2028, which is just around the corner,” Rev Owusu stated.
He acknowledged it’s too early to make final judgments since the president hasn’t completed his full term, but expressed concern about the shifting narrative.

“The conversations we are having now is entirely different from what they promised Ghanaians. You think you can joke with us? If he fails to honor that promise, he will hear from Ghanaians,” he warned.
Rev Owusu said it’s time to end the cycle of politicians making bold promises in opposition only to backtrack once in power.
“It is high time we put a stop to instances where people make promises and fail to honor them once they get power and resort to giving excuses,” he stated.

The reverend, who identifies as a Christian voter, explained that his decision to support Mahama was influenced by the president’s assurances to religious leaders.
“I voted for Mahama because of the things he told the clergy on the LGBTQ+ matter which influenced my voting decision,” he said, adding a pointed warning: “With all due respect to the president, he shouldn’t joke with Christians who are 72.1% in the country. You can’t play with us.”
