Selma Ramatu Al-Hassan Drags Captain Smart to Court Over Rawlings Child Allegation

Selma Ramatu-defamation case

Selma Ramatu Al-Hassan, a former journalist with the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), has launched a GH₵10 million defamation lawsuit against outspoken Onua TV presenter Captain Smart, accusing him of making false and damaging claims about her personal life on live television.

The suit stems from comments allegedly made by Captain Smart during a broadcast on Onua TV in November 2025, where he claimed that Selma Ramatu Al-Hassan had a child out of wedlock with Ghana’s late former President, Jerry John Rawlings. According to Selma, those statements were not only untrue but deeply reckless.

Court documents indicate that the former GBC journalist believes the remarks seriously injured her reputation, subjected her to public ridicule, and caused emotional and professional harm. Since the broadcast, she says she has been forced to deal with whispers, online speculation, and unfair judgment over claims she insists are completely fabricated.

In her action before the court, Selma Ramatu Al-Hassan is seeking GH₵10 million in damages, citing the scale of the allegation and the platform on which it was made. She is also demanding a public apology and retraction, insisting that it must be issued with the same prominence as the original comments on Onua TV.

Sources familiar with the case say the lawsuit argues that Captain Smart failed to verify his claims before presenting them as fact to a nationwide audience, a move Selma’s lawyers describe as irresponsible and harmful.

The case has already sparked conversation on social media, with many Ghanaians debating the growing trend of sensational commentary on television and radio, and where freedom of speech ends and defamation begins. Some users say media personalities must be more careful, especially when dragging private individuals into controversial narratives involving respected national figures.

Captain Smart, known for his fiery on-air style and confrontational commentary, has not officially responded to the lawsuit as of the time of publication. Onua TV has also remained silent on the matter.

As the case moves forward, it adds to the increasing number of defamation suits involving media figures in Ghana, raising fresh questions about accountability, ethics, and responsible broadcasting.

For Selma Ramatu Al-Hassan, the message appears clear: some allegations, once spoken, travel fast and this time, she wants the law to speak just as loudly.
