In a show of unity and commitment to national security, top Nigerian leaders reaffirmed their dedication to ensuring a safer and more prosperous country during the Armed Forces Remembrance Day 2026 service held in Abuja.
Speaking at the inter-denominational ceremony, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, represented by Deputy Chief Whip Peter Nwebonyi, emphasized that the government and legislature are focused on creating an environment where citizens can thrive without fear.
“Our shared goal is a Nigeria where safety and peace are the foundation for progress and growth. The sacrifices we honor today remind us of the responsibility we carry to safeguard this nation for the generations to come,” Akpabio said.
Highlighting Nigeria’s rich cultural and religious diversity, the Senate President stressed the importance of protecting constitutional freedoms. With over 500 languages spoken and a tapestry of faiths across the country, he noted that the principles of freedom of worship, conscience, and belief remain essential to maintaining harmony and democracy.
Tributes were also paid to members of the Armed Forces who have given their lives in service to the nation. Akpabio described their dedication as a cornerstone of the country’s unity and progress, and urged current leaders to make decisions that strengthen the future stability of Nigeria.
Minister of Defence Gen. Christopher Musa (retd.) praised President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to ensuring that military personnel are well-supported, motivated, and equipped to carry out their duties effectively. He acknowledged the challenges facing the nation but expressed confidence that, with proper leadership and resources, the Armed Forces will continue to protect the country.
“Service to the nation requires sacrifice, discipline, and unwavering support,” Musa remarked. “We are grateful for a leadership that recognizes and invests in our troops, ensuring they and their families are cared for as they fulfill their vital role.”
The event served as a reminder of the importance of peace, security, and national unity, and the ongoing commitment of Nigeria’s leaders to uphold these values for the well-being of every citizen.
