Senegalese football fans have come together to launch a crowdfunding campaign to help head coach Pape Thiaw pay a $100,000 fine imposed following the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final against Morocco.
The campaign, which quickly gained traction on social media, was started by supporters who felt the sanction was unfair and wanted to show appreciation for Thiaw’s role in Senegal’s historic AFCON campaign. Fans described the coach as a symbol of national pride and commitment, insisting he should not bear the financial burden alone.
Thiaw was banned for five Confederation of African Football (CAF) matches and fined $100,000 after a chaotic final. The Senegal Football Federation (FSF) was fined a total of $615,000 for various offences during the match, while the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) faced a $200,000 penalty for the behaviour of stadium ball boys. An additional $100,000 fine was imposed for players and staff obstructing the VAR review area, and $15,000 for laser distractions from Moroccan supporters.
While the fine sparked debate among football stakeholders, many Senegalese supporters viewed Thiaw’s actions as a passionate defence of his team rather than a punishable offence. Within hours of the campaign going public, fans both at home and in the diaspora began contributing, sharing donation links and messages of support online. Many emphasized that the fundraiser was less about the money and more about showing unity and solidarity with their coach.
