Family members and mourners attending the funeral of George Kwame Antwi, a deceased steward of the Presbyterian Church at Assin Odumase in the Central Region, were left in shock after discovering his body had been mistakenly buried by another family three months ago.
The family had completed all funeral preparations, including cooking, and payments for undertakers, sound systems, canopies, and other logistics ahead of the scheduled burial on Saturday, January 17, 2026.
Administrative Mix-Up at Mortuary
According to GH ONE TV, the Assin Brofoyedru Mortuary informed the family just hours before the burial that their relative had already been interred by a different family who mistook him for their 75-year-old patriarch.
Forty-year-old Antwi passed away in September 2025, and his remains were deposited at the Assin Brofoyedru Mortuary for preservation. However, when relatives arrived to retrieve the body for final funeral rites, mortuary attendants were unable to locate his remains.
The discovery disrupted the entire funeral programme despite the arrival of mourners from various parts of the country. It remains unclear when the burial will now take place.
Family Head Speaks
In an interview with Citi News on January 17, 2026, family head Asare Oduro revealed that a delegation sent to collect the body was instead directed to the Assin Fosu Police Station.
“Before the team could proceed, we were asked to report to the police station, where we were informed that another family had wrongly buried our relative about three months ago,” Oduro stated.
Reports indicate that Antwi’s body was mistakenly swapped with that of a 75-year-old man approximately three months ago. The incident has raised serious questions about mortuary identification procedures and record-keeping at the facility.
The family is currently working with police to resolve the matter, though no timeline has been provided for when the body might be exhumed or when funeral arrangements can be rescheduled.
