A tragic incident has claimed the life of a six-year-old girl at Kpetoe-Sonitra in the Volta Region after she drowned in an irrigation pond, the Ghana National Fire Service has confirmed.
The incident happened on Sunday, February 1, 2026. The child, identified as Sarah Ahiafor, had gone out with other children to wash clothes near a water body commonly used for irrigation in the area.
In a statement, the GNFS said initial findings show that the girl accidentally slipped into the pond while the children were at the site. She was later found submerged in the water.
Fire service personnel, led by ASTNO David Dzakah, were deployed to the location and carried out a search and rescue operation. Although Sarah’s body was recovered from the pond, efforts to revive her were unsuccessful.
Her remains were subsequently handed over to the Ghana Police Service for preservation and further investigation.
Following the incident, the GNFS issued a strong warning to parents and guardians, urging them to closely monitor children and prevent them from visiting irrigation ponds and other open water bodies without adult supervision.
