Super Eagles midfielder Ogenyi Onazi has raised serious concerns about road safety in Lagos after narrowly escaping what he described as a life-threatening accident involving drunk drivers.
The former Lazio and Trabzonspor midfielder took to social media on Sunday to recount the frightening experience, revealing that the incident occurred late at night when his vehicle collided with another car carrying two intoxicated occupants. Onazi shared a video on Instagram showing the heavily damaged front of his SUV, highlighting how close he came to losing his life.
According to the footballer, the crash was caused by reckless driving, which he blamed on alcohol consumption. He used the opportunity to call on the Nigerian government and relevant authorities, including the Federal Road Safety Corps, to take urgent steps to address drunk driving on Lagos roads.
“The government has to do something about drunk people driving in Lagos. Almost lost my life last night with two drunk boys in the car,” Onazi wrote.
The incident comes just days after the former international celebrated his birthday, receiving goodwill messages from notable Nigerian football figures such as former Super Eagles captain Vincent Enyeama and ex-Premier League striker Peter Odemwingie.
Onazi, who was a key member of Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations-winning squad in 2013, is now the latest high-profile personality to draw attention to the dangers posed by reckless and intoxicated driving in Lagos.
