Early this morning, Ghana was hit by a heavy downpour that caught many people off guard.

The rain started pounding down around 3:30 am on Sunday and kept going strong well into the day, turning roads into rivers and low-lying neighbourhoods into pools of water. It was exactly what the weather experts had warned about.

They had predicted a wet weekend and told everyone to be ready.

But no warning quite prepares you for the sight of your street suddenly underwater.

The heaviest impact has been felt in the Greater Accra, Ashanti, and Central regions. In Accra, places like Nima, Weija, Kasoa, Kaneshie, Accra Central, Circle, Dansoman, and Mallam Junction are all dealing with serious waterlogging.

Cars are crawling through flooded junctions, some compounds have water lapping at the doorsteps, and many families have had to move their belongings upstairs or to higher ground. For Christians across the country, the timing couldn’t have been worse. Palm Sunday services — the joyful start to Holy Week before Easter — were disrupted as people stayed indoors or struggled to get to church. Instead of waving palm branches and singing hymns, many found themselves dealing with wet homes and blocked roads.Social media has been full of frustration. One person summed up what a lot of Ghanaians are feeling: after years of hearing about government committees set up to fix flooding, another heavy rain still brings chaos. “Just one rain and the whole country is flooded,” they wrote, sharing pictures of the mess in Accra. The downpour is still going in several areas as the afternoon wears on.

So far, thankfully, there are no reports of anyone being hurt or of major damage to homes and buildings. But the water is still rising in some spots, and people are being extra careful. This kind of rain is becoming far too familiar in Ghana. Every rainy season brings the same worry — will the drains cope? Will the low areas flood again? Families in vulnerable communities have learned to keep sandbags ready and to watch the skies closely. For now, the message from the authorities and weather forecasters is simple: stay safe, avoid flooded roads, and look out for neighbours who might need help. As the rain continues, many Ghanaians are hoping it eases soon so Palm Sunday can end on a calmer note and the clean-up can begin. It’s a reminder that while the rains bring life to the land, they also test how well we’ve prepared our cities to handle them. And right now, in Accra and beyond, that test is very much underway.
