Ghana’s gospel music community is in mourning following the death of veteran gospel musician Yaw Sarpong, founder and leader of the iconic Asomafo gospel group.

The passing of the revered musician was confirmed by his manager, Nana Poku Ashis, in an interview with MyJoyOnline. As of the time of reporting, no official cause of death has been disclosed.
Yaw Sarpong’s death comes at a deeply emotional time for the gospel fraternity, coming just weeks after the loss of Maame Tiwa, a long-serving and prominent member of the Asomafo group. The double loss has intensified grief among fans, musicians and church communities across the country.

In recent years, Yaw Sarpong had been battling prolonged health challenges, which led him to scale back public appearances and performances while focusing on medical care. Despite his absence from the stage, his influence on Ghanaian gospel music never waned.
Widely regarded as a pioneer of contemporary Akan gospel music, Yaw Sarpong helped redefine the genre through rich vocal harmonies, disciplined musical arrangements and lyrics deeply rooted in Christian teachings. Under his leadership, Yaw Sarpong and Asomafo became one of Ghana’s most respected gospel ensembles, shaping worship music for decades.
The group produced several timeless classics, including Wo Haw Ne Hwan, Tie Obiaa, Aduro Yesu and Awurade Kasa, songs that remain staples in churches and Christian gatherings nationwide.
In recognition of his immense contribution to Ghanaian music, Yaw Sarpong received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards, a fitting honour for a man whose legacy will continue to inspire generations.
