Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang on Thursday paid a courtesy visit to the Ministry of Sports and Recreation to review progress in the sector and assess preparations for major upcoming events, including Ghana’s participation in the 2026 World Cup. The visit is part of her ongoing tour of selected ministries marking her first year in office.
She was warmly received by Minister of Sports and Recreation, Mr. Kofi Iddie Adams, who highlighted key achievements under the current administration. These included hosting major international tournaments, winning medals across multiple sports disciplines, and securing Ghana’s qualification for the 2026 World Cup. Mr. Adams emphasized the need for increased investment in sports infrastructure, mobilization of financial support ahead of the World Cup, and timely release of funds to ensure smooth operations.
The Minister also updated the Vice President on the progress of operationalizing the Sports Fund, noting that a board would be inaugurated on Friday to address long-standing funding challenges in Ghanaian sports.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang stressed that her visit aimed to strengthen cooperation between her office and the Ministry of Sports. “I want to assure you that our doors remain open to you. Don’t wait until there is a problem—come and have a chat, especially in preparation for bills. We are better placed to offer support, and if there are things to review, we are here because we want your suggestions to go through, and we have your back,” she said.
The Vice President also expressed keen interest in athlete welfare and safety, emphasizing that “people don’t need to suffer based on the discipline they have chosen.” She reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting athletes and creating an environment that encourages performance and safety across all sports.
The engagement highlights the administration’s focus on strengthening sports development, improving athlete support systems, and ensuring that Ghana is fully prepared for international competitions. The Ministry of Sports has pledged to continue working closely with the Vice President’s office to achieve these objectives.
