Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface will miss the remainder of the season after Werder Bremen confirmed he needs knee surgery.
The 25-year-old, on loan from Bayer Leverkusen, appeared 11 times for Bremen this season but was unable to find the back of the net. The injury also forced him to miss Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations squad in Morocco, as well as Bremen’s final two fixtures of 2025.
Following a consultation with a specialist in Austria, the club confirmed that surgery was the best course of action, meaning Boniface will be sidelined for several months.
“We are happy that we now have a solution to let Victor perform a surgery. There is clarity for all parties,” Werder Bremen doctor Peter Niemeyer explained. “Due to the rehabilitation process, we no longer assume that Victor will still be available for Werder this season.”
The club emphasized that his loan, running until the end of the 2025/26 campaign, will continue as planned, with Leverkusen’s doctors involved in the decision.
Boniface previously scored 22 goals in 42 Bundesliga appearances for Leverkusen, including 14 goals during their 2023/24 title-winning season.
Taking to X, Boniface reflected on his struggles over the past year, writing: “Putting fake smile for almost a year. But God know why all this is happening. Grateful to God.”
