The Yoruba film industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of popular actress Ajara Lasisi, widely known as Aunty Ajara.
The Nigerian actress passed away in the early hours of Thursday, her family has confirmed. News of her death has since sparked an outpouring of tributes from colleagues and fans who had been closely following her health struggles in recent days.
Confirmation came through a video message shared online by her brother, Ridwan Lasisi, who thanked members of the public and the film community for their support during the actress’s illness. He also urged well-wishers to discontinue any financial donations previously meant for her medical treatment.
“Good morning to you all. My name is Ridwan Lasisi. I am a brother to Ajara. The doctor confirmed to us this morning that Ajara has passed on,” he said.
“All the families, we are using this period to appreciate you all. We appreciate the president and all industry members.
“We also use this opportunity to appeal to those sending money not to send it anymore. The one we are contributing for her sake is no more. Thank you so much. We do not want you to send money into that account again.”
Ajara Lasisi’s health condition became public knowledge last week after fellow actress Ronke Oshodi-Oke raised an alarm and appealed for financial assistance on her behalf. According to Oshodi-Oke, the actress had been hospitalised in critical condition and was placed on oxygen support as her health continued to deteriorate.
Despite intensive medical care and the high cost of treatment, her condition reportedly failed to improve, leading to her passing. The late actress was well known for her comic roles and strong screen presence in Yoruba-language films, where she earned the nickname “Aunty Ajara.”
Her death marks another painful loss for the Nigerian film industry, especially within the Yoruba movie community.
