Brandon Thomas-Asante’s remarkable football journey has become one of the inspiring stories of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the Ghana international earning praise from English football legends after overcoming early setbacks in his career.
The striker, who was released by Milton Keynes Dons as a teenager, has defied the odds to reach football’s biggest stage with the Black Stars of Ghana.
Thomas-Asante’s rise has been highlighted by former England captain Gary Neville and legendary striker Ian Wright, both of whom have pointed to his career as proof that early disappointments do not have to define a player’s future.
Neville revealed that he has followed the striker’s progress closely since Thomas-Asante’s early days at Salford City, the club he co-owns.
Speaking on the “Stick to Football” podcast, Neville recalled how the forward earned an opportunity at Salford after impressing during a trial period.
At the time, Warren Joyce, who was overseeing the club’s newly established B team, strongly recommended signing the striker after witnessing his performances. Thomas-Asante quickly justified that decision by scoring five or six goals in just eight matches.
His impressive displays helped launch a career that would eventually take him through the English football pyramid and onto the international stage.
Former Arsenal and England striker Ian Wright also praised Thomas-Asante’s determination and resilience, comparing his journey to that of fellow Ghana international Antoine Semenyo.
Both players worked their way through the lower divisions of English football before earning opportunities at higher levels and eventually representing Ghana at the World Cup.
“You have to hang in there,” Wright said while discussing the striker’s journey, emphasizing the importance of persistence and self-belief for young footballers facing setbacks.
Thomas-Asante’s story serves as a reminder that being released by a club at a young age does not necessarily signal the end of a professional career.
Instead of giving up after leaving Milton Keynes Dons, he continued working on his game, gradually progressing through non-league and lower-division football before establishing himself at a higher level.
His consistent performances eventually earned him recognition from Ghana’s national team selectors, leading to his inclusion in the Black Stars squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The striker played an important role in Ghana’s opening World Cup victory over Panama, helping create the winning goal during a dramatic stoppage-time counterattack that secured a 1-0 victory for the Black Stars.
His appearance on football’s biggest stage represents the culmination of years of perseverance, hard work, and determination.
For many young players who face rejection early in their careers, Thomas-Asante’s journey provides a powerful example that setbacks can become stepping stones toward future success.
As Ghana continues its World Cup campaign, the striker’s story is already being celebrated as one of resilience and determination, proving that talent combined with persistence can overcome even the toughest obstacles.
