The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has sanctioned Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) president Samuel Eto’o with a $20,000 fine and a four-match ban over his conduct during Cameroon’s Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinal loss to Morocco.
CAF said the punishment followed what it described as Eto’o’s inappropriate behaviour on the sidelines, where he was seen reacting angrily to refereeing decisions during the highly charged encounter. The incident reportedly took place in full view of CAF president Patrice Motsepe.
Tensions ran high throughout the match, with players from both Cameroon and Morocco involved in physical confrontations. CAF later confirmed it had launched investigations into several cases of violent conduct recorded during the tournament.
FECAFOOT acknowledged the sanction in a statement issued on Wednesday night but rejected the basis of the ruling, insisting that it was issued without clear justification.
The federation also criticised the speed of the disciplinary process, arguing that it did not allow for a fair and balanced hearing. FECAFOOT added that Eto’o intends to challenge the decision through the appropriate appeal channels.
“FECAFOOT fully supports its president and reaffirms its commitment to fairness, justice, and respect for due process in football governance,” the statement said.
Meanwhile, the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations will conclude on Sunday, with host nation Morocco set to face Senegal in the final.
