Cameroon has officially confirmed the deaths of 16 of its nationals who joined the Russian military and were killed in the war in Ukraine.

The government received the list of names from the Russian embassy in Yaoundé and made the announcement on Monday. The names were read out on national radio, and authorities are now urging the families of the deceased to come forward and contact them.

This marks the first time Yaoundé has publicly acknowledged the loss of its citizens fighting alongside Russian forces in what Moscow calls its “special military operation.”

The 16 men are part of a much larger group of African recruits who signed up to fight in Ukraine. Reports show that hundreds of fighters from across the continent have died since 2023, with Cameroon recording the highest number among African nations.

Many of these young men were reportedly lured with promises of good pay and better opportunities, only to find themselves on the front lines of a brutal conflict far from home.

Similar stories have emerged from other African countries, where families have discovered their relatives were tricked or pressured into joining the Russian army. For the families in Cameroon, the news brings painful closure after months of uncertainty.

The government has not released further details about how or when the men died, but the public reading of their names has left many in shock.

The confirmation comes as the war in Ukraine continues to draw in fighters from around the world, including hundreds of Africans. While some joined voluntarily seeking financial gain, others have described being misled about the realities of the battlefield.

As the names sink in across Cameroon, the focus now turns to supporting the grieving families and answering questions about how so many of their young men ended up in a distant war. For now, the country is quietly mourning its lost sons while the rest of the world watches the conflict grind on.
