Torrential rains have devastated parts of Angola, killing at least 40 people and leaving several others missing after severe flash floods hit the country over the weekend.
The hardest-hit areas are the capital Luanda and the coastal city of Benguela. In Luanda province, 13 people lost their lives and five remain unaccounted for. Benguela province saw 26 deaths with four people still missing.
Local reports also confirmed at least six more deaths in the provinces of Cuanza Sul and Malanje.
The heavy downpours submerged streets, destroyed homes, and caused widespread flooding. More than 600 homes were completely destroyed in Luanda and Benguela, while over 9,500 properties were flooded.
Authorities say more than 51,000 people have been affected by the disaster.
Emergency teams are working around the clock to pump out floodwater from homes and streets. They are also distributing food and clean drinking water to those in need. Officials report that conditions are gradually improving as the waters begin to recede.
Heavy rains are typical during Angola’s rainy season, but experts warn that climate change is making these extreme weather events more frequent and severe across southern Africa.
