Ghana lost a distinguished law enforcement legend recently. Former Ashanti Regional Police Commander, Commissioner of Police (COP) Kwasi Mensah Duku (Rtd.), has passed away. He died at the Police Hospital in Accra at age 69 after fighting a brief illness.
If you followed policing in Kumasi and beyond, you know COP Duku built a reputation as a tough, dedicated, and accessible officer. His loss hits hard for those of us who appreciate genuine public service. How often do we see police leaders who manage to stay both deeply firm and widely respected by local communities?
The Legacy of COP Kwasi Mensah Duku
COP Duku earned widespread respect across the country throughout his long career. He didn’t just sit in a fancy air-conditioned office; he led operations from the front lines.
He served as Regional Police Commander in multiple high-stakes regions, leaving a lasting mark everywhere he went:

Ashanti Region: He led regional security operations up until his active retirement in 2021.

Western Region: He managed regional security and tackled complex industrial and local crime issues.

Upper West Region: He strengthened border community policing and maintained public safety across districts.
Former President Nana Akufo-Addo promoted him to Commissioner of Police in 2019. That promotion recognized decades of consistent performance. IMO, he fully earned every single rank on his shoulders!

I always admired how COP Duku handled security in Kumasi, a city that tests even the most seasoned officers. He tackled armed robbery, resolved land guard disputes, and maintained law and order during crucial election cycles.

Family and Funeral Arrangements
COP Duku hailed from Goaso in the Ahafo Region. Family spokesman Kwame Asare Boadu confirmed that the family is currently planning the traditional one-week observation in Accra and Goaso.
His passing leaves a massive vacuum in his family, his hometown, and the entire law enforcement community. FYI, formal dates for his final funeral rites will follow shortly after family consultations.
Remembering a Fine Officer
COP Kwasi Mensah Duku lived a life dedicated to protecting others. Ghana owes him a huge debt of gratitude for his decades of tireless duty.
