Member of Parliament for Guan, Fred Agbenyo, has criticised Canadian authorities over the alleged denial of a visa to Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey ahead of the Black Stars’ scheduled activities in the North American country.

Speaking on TV3’s New Day programme, Mr Agbenyo described the reported decision as unfair and disappointing, arguing that the footballer’s visit to Canada was solely in the national interest and not for immigration purposes.

According to him, Thomas Partey had no intention of remaining in Canada beyond the duration of his assignment with Ghana’s national team. He maintained that the player was only expected to represent his country and return after fulfilling his responsibilities.

“It is really pathetic and unfair for Canada to deny Thomas Partey a visa. He does not even intend to stay in the country but only to play for his country,” Mr Agbenyo said during the television discussion.

The comments have sparked conversations among football fans and sections of the public, many of whom have questioned the circumstances surrounding the reported visa denial.

Although Canadian authorities have not publicly commented on the matter, the issue has generated debate about the travel challenges athletes from developing countries sometimes face when participating in international competitions and sporting engagements.

Thomas Partey remains one of Ghana’s most recognisable football figures, having represented the Black Stars at major international tournaments and built a successful career at the highest level of European football. His absence from any national team assignment due to visa complications would likely raise concerns among supporters and the football fraternity.

Mr Agbenyo argued that athletes representing their countries should not be subjected to unnecessary obstacles when travelling for official national duties. He suggested that greater consideration should be given to the purpose of such visits, especially when the individuals involved have established professional careers and clear travel itineraries.

The Guan legislator’s remarks add another layer to ongoing discussions about visa restrictions and their impact on international sporting participation. Over the years, several athletes and officials from different countries have encountered similar difficulties, resulting in disruptions to preparations and competition schedules.

While details surrounding Thomas Partey’s alleged visa denial remain limited, the issue has attracted significant public attention in Ghana, with many awaiting further clarification from the relevant authorities.

For now, the comments by Fred Agbenyo reflect growing frustration over what some perceive as an unfair treatment of a player travelling to fulfil national duties rather than seeking long term entry into another country.
