President John Dramani Mahama’s call for an “Accra Reset” represents an important and timely incentive
for developing nations seeking greater economic independence and sustainable growth.
Addressing heads at the 65th Anniversary of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in Belgrade, President
Mahama urged countries of the Global South to move beyond dependence on the export of raw materials
and instead build strong domestic industries, create local value and secure fairer terms of international trade.
The Accra Reset offers a practical vision for transforming Africa’s mineral and agricultural wealth into
engines of industrial development. By adding value to natural resources at home, developing local
manufacturing capacity and strengthening resource sovereignty, developing nations can create jobs, increase
national revenues and build more resilient economies.
The initiative also highlights the importance of affordable development finance and a fairer global economic
system—issues that remain central to the aspirations of countries across the Global South.
Gautam Karve, Editor-in-Chief of the World Media Organization, welcomed President Mahama’s initiative
and expressed strong support for the Accra Reset. He said the proposal provides an important incentive for
developing nations to pursue economic self-reliance, resource sovereignty and sustainable development
while strengthening their position in the global economy.
The Accra Reset can therefore become more than a policy proposal it can serve as a catalyst for a new
approach to development, where nations use their own resources, capabilities and human capital to build
prosperous and self-reliant futures.
