President John Dramani Mahama has held discussions with officials of American aerospace company Boeing, resulting in an agreed roadmap towards establishing Ghana’s proposed national airline.
The development marks another step in the government’s efforts to restore a national carrier and strengthen Ghana’s position in the aviation industry.
According to the information released on Friday, November 6, 2026, preliminary studies have affirmed the viability of the proposed airline.
The roadmap outlines key activities that must be completed before the airline can begin operations.
Key steps towards establishing the airline
The agreed roadmap includes identifying a strategic airline partner and a technical partner to support the establishment and operations of the proposed carrier.
It also covers the acquisition of an Air Operator Certificate (AOC), selection of an appropriate aircraft fleet and arrangements for financing the project.
An Air Operator Certificate is an important regulatory approval that allows an airline to operate commercial flights after meeting the required safety and operational standards.
These requirements will help determine the airline’s operational structure, technical capacity and long-term sustainability.
Boeing pledges continued support
The Boeing delegation has assured President Mahama of its continued support during the establishment and operational phases of the proposed airline.
The company’s involvement is expected to provide technical guidance as Ghana works towards developing a national carrier capable of operating in the competitive aviation market.
However, important decisions remain to be made, particularly regarding the airline’s strategic partners, aircraft selection, regulatory approvals and financing arrangements.
Ghana seeks to become a West African aviation hub
The proposed national airline forms part of President Mahama’s broader ambition to position Accra as a leading aviation hub in West Africa.
Government hopes that a national carrier will increase the use of Ghana’s airport infrastructure and strengthen the country’s role in regional and international air transport.
The project is also expected to create employment opportunities in areas such as piloting, cabin services, aircraft engineering, airport operations and aviation management.
Target set for airline to begin operations before 2029
President Mahama has previously expressed his ambition to establish a national airline before the end of his current presidential tenure in January 2029.
The latest engagement with Boeing provides a framework for advancing that objective.
Ghana previously operated Ghana Airways, which ceased operations in 2004. Since then, successive governments have explored different plans to restore a national carrier.
The agreed roadmap represents a new phase in those efforts. The success of the project will depend on completing the necessary technical, financial, regulatory and partnership arrangements.
For now, the focus will be on turning the roadmap into a workable plan that can deliver a sustainable national airline for Ghana.
