Ghana Reaffirms Commitment to Media Freedom and Democratic Governance

The Government of Ghana has officially reiterated its strong commitment to press freedom. Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, emphasized this stance during the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) World Press Freedom Day 2026 Honours Night in Accra.

Speaking on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, the Minister stated that the administration views a free press as central to national development and democratic governance. He stressed that the government does not perceive media scrutiny as a threat to its authority.

President Mahama reportedly views criticism as an essential component of democratic leadership rather than something to fear. According to the Minister, the President chooses to respond to critiques with confidence instead of state intimidation or harassment.

The administration highlighted several key indicators to demonstrate its support for a free and open media environment:

  • Under President Mahama’s tenure, not a single journalist has lost their life while carrying out their professional duties.
  • The government has not forced any journalist to flee the country out of fear for their safety.
  • No media house has been shut down by the state for expressing critical views or speaking truth to power.
  • The administration actively engages the media fraternity through regular dialogue, viewing this interaction as a standard democratic duty.

The Minister described the government’s approach as a response to the quiet confidence of a leader who understands that criticism is the price of governance. This ongoing dialogue aims to maintain Ghana’s status as one of the most open media environments within the entire region.

The GJA Honours Night provided a platform for media practitioners, civil society actors, and government officials to celebrate World Press Freedom Day. The event also recognized various journalists for their significant contributions to the country’s democratic development.

These remarks arrive during a period of renewed national conversation regarding professional standards in the digital information space. The government intends to continue fostering an environment where journalists can operate safely while holding leadership accountable.

Ultimately, the administration maintains that the press serves as the heartbeat of the nation’s democracy. By prioritizing transparency and open communication, the government hopes to strengthen the relationship between the state and the media for the benefit of all citizens.
