NAFDAC Warns Parents Against Unregistered SMA Infant Formula in Nigeria
The National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a warning to parents and caregivers across Nigeria about the sale of unregistered SMA infant formula products. This comes after a global recall by Nestlé affected over 60 countries, raising concerns about the safety of certain baby formula batches.
While Nigeria is not part of the global recall, NAFDAC stressed that any SMA infant formula sold locally without approved registration numbers is illegal and should not be used. Parents are being urged to be vigilant and always check for NAFDAC approval before buying formula for their children.
Which SMA Products Are Safe in Nigeria
According to NAFDAC, the only SMA products officially registered for sale in Nigeria are:
SMA Gold 1 with NAFDAC Number B1-2783
SMA Gold 2 with NAFDAC Number B1-2780
SMA Gold 3 with NAFDAC Number B1-2781
Any other SMA product found in circulation without these registration numbers should be considered unregistered and unsafe. NAFDAC strongly advises parents to only purchase products from authorised sellers and trusted stores.
Why the Global Recall Happened
The global recall by Nestlé affected selected batches of SMA, NAN, BEBA, and Alfamino products. It was triggered by concerns about the possible presence of cereulide, a heat-resistant toxin produced by the bacterium Bacillus cereus. This bacterium can cause nausea, vomiting, and severe illness, which is especially dangerous for infants.
NAFDAC reassured parents that these recalled batches do not include products manufactured for the Nigerian market, which remain safe and compliant with local regulations.
How NAFDAC Is Protecting Consumers
To ensure safety, NAFDAC has deployed zonal directors and state coordinators nationwide to monitor distribution channels and identify any unregistered or recalled products. Retailers are being urged to comply with regulations, and parents are encouraged to report any suspicious products to the nearest NAFDAC office.
The agency also provides online platforms for adverse event reporting, allowing caregivers to quickly alert authorities to any issues with infant formula.
Nestlé Nigeria Reassures Parents
Nestlé Nigeria has confirmed that its locally sold products, including SMA Gold 1, 2, and 3, and NAN Optipro 1, 2, and 3, are safe for consumption. All of these products are officially registered with NAFDAC and meet both national and international safety standards. Parents can continue to use these products without concern.
Tips for Parents Buying Infant Formula
Even with official assurances, NAFDAC encourages parents to:
- Always check for valid NAFDAC registration numbers on packaging
- Purchase formula only from authorised and trusted sellers
- Store products according to manufacturer instructions
- Observe infants for any unusual reactions after feeding
By following these steps, parents can ensure their children are fed safely and avoid potentially harmful unregistered products.
Why This Matters
Global recalls like this highlight the importance of strict safety standards for infant nutrition. NAFDAC’s alert is a reminder for parents to stay informed and prioritise their child’s health. Staying vigilant, buying from authorised sellers, and reporting unregistered products helps protect infants and ensures peace of mind for families.
