Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has called for due process in the sexual misconduct allegations involving the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS), Zakaria Abdulai.
She described the matter as a serious national concern, stressing that the allegations must be handled through the appropriate legal and administrative procedures.
The Vice President made the remarks on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, when she spoke to journalists upon her return from China, where she attended the Global South Academic Forum in Shanghai.
‘Let the Law Take Its Course’
Professor Opoku-Agyemang said she had been following developments surrounding the case and acknowledged the concern it had generated across the country.
She urged the public to allow the relevant authorities to carry out their work and ensure that the matter is handled according to the law.
“What I want to see is that we all allow the law to take its course,” she said.
The Vice President added that the case had implications beyond the immediate allegations, particularly because of its potential impact on the lives and futures of young people.
She emphasised that the seriousness of the matter required a careful response and respect for the processes established to investigate the allegations.
Investigations Into Obuasi SHTS Allegations
The case involves allegations of sexual misconduct and abuse against Mr Abdulai, which have attracted national attention following an investigative report by journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni.
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has interdicted the headmaster pending further investigations. The police are also investigating complaints related to the allegations.
The GES has additionally directed the Ashanti Regional Director of Education and the Obuasi Municipal Director of Education to step aside while investigations continue, to help protect the integrity of the process.
The allegations remain subject to investigation, and the outcome must be determined through the appropriate legal procedures.
Calls for Accountability and Student Protection
The controversy has renewed public discussion about safeguarding students, the responsibility of school authorities and the need for effective systems to handle complaints of sexual misconduct in educational institutions.
While the Vice President called for the law to take its course, the case has also highlighted the importance of ensuring that students are protected and that concerns raised about their safety receive appropriate attention.
The outcome of the investigations is expected to help establish the facts and determine any further action required by the relevant authorities.
