A long-running dispute over fertile farmland has turned tragically bloody in the Krachi Nchumuru District of the Oti Region, leaving one person dead and six others with life-threatening injuries.
The clash between the Kwadwoti and Macheri Konkonba communities erupted in the farming areas of Wurenja and Beposo, shattering the peace of what should have been quiet Easter weekend farmlands.
What started as a heated argument over who owns and can cultivate the rich soil quickly spiralled into violence, with homes belonging to Nchumuru families set ablaze and terrified residents fleeing into neighbouring towns for safety.
Thick smoke still hung over Beposo on Friday as families mourned and counted their losses.
The deceased, whose name is being withheld until police formally confirm the identity, died from severe injuries sustained during the fighting. The six injured survivors are receiving emergency treatment at nearby hospitals, some of them in critical condition.
Local sources described the scene as chaotic and uncontrollable. “Property has been lost, but the loss of life is what has broken the spirit of the people here,” one resident said, capturing the deep sorrow now hanging over the communities. The feud has simmered for years over ownership rights to the same fertile plots that both groups depend on for their livelihoods. In a region where farming is everything, small disagreements over boundaries and cultivation can quickly boil over when tensions are already high.In response, a heavy security presence has been deployed across the district. Armed patrols are now visible in Wurenja and Beposo, working to keep the peace and prevent any revenge attacks.
District authorities say a full investigation is underway to identify those who started the violence and bring them to justice.“We are working to bring those responsible to justice,” a security spokesperson said. “Our immediate priority is restoring order and ensuring that no further blood is spilled.”The tragedy has once again thrown a harsh spotlight on the recurring land disputes that continue to plague parts of the Oti Region.
Traditional leaders, civil society groups and residents are calling for more than just temporary soldiers on the ground. They want genuine dialogue, proper mediation and a lasting solution that respects everyone’s rights to the land. Many families who fled their homes are now living in fear, worried that the cycle of violence could return.
They have petitioned the government to step in with real conflict-resolution efforts so that farmers can return to their fields without looking over their shoulders. For the people of Krachi Nchumuru, this is not just about one bad day of fighting – it is about protecting lives, homes and the future of their communities. The loss of even one life in such a dispute is one too many, and the six injured serve as a painful reminder of how quickly things can go wrong when land issues are left unresolved. As smoke clears and investigations continue, the hope in Wurenja and Beposo is that this latest violence becomes the wake-up call needed to finally settle the feud peacefully.
The soil that feeds families should never have to be watered with blood.
