The seven fishermen who went missing after leaving Sekondi Fishing Harbour have reportedly made contact after drifting approximately 120 nautical miles at sea.
The crew members have indicated that they are all safe and well. However, they have run out of food, raising fresh concerns about their survival and the urgent need to locate and rescue them.
The development brings hope to their families and the fishing community, who have been worried about their whereabouts since the canoe failed to return from its fishing expedition.
Seven Crew Members Reportedly Safe but Need Urgent Assistance
According to the latest update, the seven crew members managed to establish contact after drifting far from their original location.
Although they have reported that they are doing well, the lack of food remains a serious concern. Their situation requires urgent attention to ensure they receive the necessary assistance and return home safely.
Drifting for such a long distance can make it difficult to determine a vessel’s exact position, particularly when its engine is not functioning properly.
The immediate priority is to establish the crew’s location and coordinate a rescue operation before their situation becomes more dangerous.
How the Fishing Canoe Went Missing
The canoe, identified as Second Chance, reportedly left Sekondi Fishing Harbour on October 9, 2026, for a fishing expedition off the coast of Axim.
The vessel’s owner, Nana Kweku Atta, reported the disappearance at the Fishing Harbour Police Station in Sekondi on October 18 after the canoe failed to return.
Initial reports indicated that repeated attempts to contact the crew had been unsuccessful. Investigators also considered the possibility that engine failure had caused the canoe to drift towards the Tema and Volta coastal areas.
The Western Regional Marine Police Command subsequently coordinated a search involving the Ghana Navy, Ghana Maritime Authority, Fisheries Commission and fishing communities along the coast.
The latest reported contact from the crew could provide important information to help establish their location and support rescue efforts.
Rescue Efforts Remain Critical
With the fishermen reportedly out of food, locating them quickly is essential. Their reported contact may help rescuers narrow down the search area, although their exact position and the circumstances surrounding the drift need to be confirmed.
The relevant maritime authorities will need to establish the canoe’s location and assess the safest way to bring the crew ashore.
Their families and the wider fishing community will be hoping for a successful rescue and a safe return.
The reported contact from the seven missing Sekondi fishermen offers a welcome development in a worrying situation. Although the crew members say they are well, running out of food after drifting approximately 120 nautical miles remains a serious concern.
The focus now is on locating the fishermen, delivering assistance and ensuring their safe return.
