Residents of Tetegu, near Weija, are still trying to come to terms with a troubling incident that unfolded on Sunday, January 19, 2026, after a taxi driver lost his life following a confrontation involving a female police officer.
The incident, which has since drawn public attention and social media debate, reportedly happened in the late hours of the day. According to preliminary information from the Ghana Police Service, the officer and the driver were involved in an altercation that escalated unexpectedly.
The driver, who was operating a Hyundai i10 taxi, was allegedly shot during the confrontation. Eyewitnesses in the area say the situation happened so fast that many people did not immediately understand what had gone wrong until they saw the driver slumped and bleeding.
He was rushed in critical condition to the Police Hospital in Accra, with hopes that doctors could save him. Sadly, those hopes were cut short. Medical officials later confirmed that the taxi driver was pronounced dead on arrival.
But the drama did not end there.
As the policewoman reportedly tried to leave the scene after the shooting, another incident occurred. She was said to have been knocked down by a passing vehicle under unclear circumstances. The officer sustained injuries to her head and both legs and was quickly taken for medical treatment. She is currently on admission and responding to care, according to police sources.
Meanwhile, officers who arrived to secure and process the crime scene recovered several items of interest. These include one live 9mm round, a magazine, and a spent 9mm cartridge—exhibits that are expected to play a key role in ongoing investigations.
The Ghana Police Service has confirmed that a full-scale investigation is underway to establish exactly what led to the fatal shooting and whether proper procedures were followed. Authorities say all necessary steps will be taken, and the public will be informed as developments unfold.
In an official statement signed by Deputy Superintendent of Police Richmond Mensah on behalf of the Director-General of Public Affairs, the police assured Ghanaians that the matter is being treated with the seriousness it deserves.
As emotions remain high in Tetegu and nearby communities, many residents are calling for justice, transparency, and accountability, especially at a time when trust between civilians and law enforcement remains a sensitive issue.
For now, the facts are still being pieced together but one thing is certain: a life has been lost, and a community is left with questions that demand clear answers.
