U.S. Embassy in Accra to Suspend Most Consular Services from July 20 to July 31

U.S. Embassy in Accra to Suspend Most Consular Services from July 20 to July 31

The United States Embassy in Accra has announced that it will temporarily suspend most routine consular services from July 20 to July 31, 2026, to carry out scheduled maintenance at its facility.

According to the Embassy, normal consular operations will resume on Monday, August 3, 2026, after the maintenance work is completed.

The temporary suspension will affect many routine services provided to U.S. citizens and visa applicants. During this period, the Embassy said walk-in notary services and Consular Reports of Death Abroad will not be available.

Despite the temporary closure of most services, some essential activities will continue.

Applicants who have already received an email confirming that their passport or Consular Report of Birth Abroad (CRBA) is ready for collection will still be able to pick up their documents.

The Embassy said these collections will take place every Thursday between 1:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. throughout the maintenance period.

In addition, adult passport renewal applications submitted through the Embassy’s secure drop box will continue to be processed. Applicants can find instructions for using the drop box on the Embassy’s official website.

The Embassy also assured U.S. citizens living in or visiting Ghana that emergency consular assistance will remain available during the maintenance period.

Anyone facing an emergency requiring immediate consular support can contact the Embassy’s duty officer by calling +233 (0) 30 274 1000.

Officials encouraged members of the public to plan ahead and complete any non-urgent consular business before the temporary suspension begins.

The Embassy also advised applicants to regularly check its website for updates regarding the maintenance schedule and the full resumption of services.

Routine consular services include passport applications, notarial services, reports of birth abroad, and assistance with various documentation needs for U.S. citizens. Many of these services require appointments, which will be affected during the temporary maintenance period.

The Embassy explained that the maintenance work is necessary to improve its facilities and ensure it can continue providing safe and efficient services to the public.

People with upcoming travel plans or document requirements are encouraged to review their schedules and make any necessary arrangements before July 20 to avoid delays.

Normal operations are expected to resume on August 3, when all routine consular services will once again be available at the U.S. Embassy in Accra.
