An 87-year-old man, Yaw Gahornu, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison by the Police Headquarters Gender-Based Violence Court after pleading guilty to repeatedly sexually abusing a nine-year-old girl at Ofankor in Accra.

The victim lived near the convict. Reports indicate that the abuse occurred between July and August 21, 2026, whenever the girl went out to play, until Gahornu was caught.

The case came to light on August 29, 2026, when the girl’s mother returned home from work and noticed blood stains on her daughter’s underwear.

The discovery raised concerns about the child’s safety and led to the matter being reported for investigation.

Gahornu subsequently pleaded guilty to the offences and was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

The case highlights the need to protect children from sexual abuse and ensure that suspected offences are reported promptly to the appropriate authorities.

The sentence follows the court proceedings in which Gahornu admitted to the offences.
