The Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, has engaged Communications Minister Sam George and other stakeholders to address recurring fibre-optic cable cuts during road construction and rehabilitation works.
The incidents often disrupt telecommunications services and internet connectivity, affecting individuals, businesses and other institutions that depend on reliable communication networks.
The engagement is aimed at finding ways to improve coordination between road contractors and telecommunications stakeholders to prevent damage to underground fibre-optic cables during construction activities.
Fibre-optic cables carry large volumes of data and support internet access, mobile communication and other digital services. Damage to these cables can interrupt services and affect customers in areas served by the damaged network.
The recurring incidents have raised concerns about the need for road contractors to identify existing utility infrastructure before excavation and other construction activities begin.
Improved planning, information-sharing and cooperation among the relevant agencies and service providers could help reduce disruptions and protect critical telecommunications infrastructure.
The engagement brings together stakeholders from the roads and communications sectors to address the issue and explore measures to prevent further damage to fibre-optic cables during road works.
