The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced plans to establish a second Passport Application Centre in the Ashanti Region, with operations expected to begin in the first quarter of 2027.
Mr Ablakwa made the announcement after a working visit to the Passport Application Centre in Kumasi on Wednesday, October 14, 2026.
According to the minister, the new centre will be located in Mampong, where a facility has already been secured for the project.
In a post on X following the visit, Ablakwa said preparations would begin soon to equip the facility and make it ready for operations.
“This second Passport Application Centre will be located in Mampong where a facility has already been secured. We shall commence equipping the facility in the next few weeks,” he wrote.
Mampong to Get New Passport Centre
The proposed centre is expected to expand access to passport application services in the Ashanti Region.
Currently, applicants in the region rely on the existing Passport Application Centre in Kumasi and other available service arrangements.
Establishing another centre in Mampong could make passport services more accessible to residents in the municipality and surrounding communities, potentially reducing the need for some applicants to travel to Kumasi.
The project is also expected to support efforts to improve the delivery of passport services and make the application process more convenient for the public.
Government Targets First Quarter of 2027
The announcement comes as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs continues efforts to improve passport application services across the country.
With a facility already secured in Mampong, the next stage will involve equipping the centre before it begins operations.
The government is targeting the first quarter of 2027 for the establishment of the second Passport Application Centre in the Ashanti Region.
However, the centre’s readiness will depend on the progress of the planned equipment and preparations.
If completed as announced, the facility will provide an additional location for passport applicants in the region and could help ease pressure on existing services in Kumasi.
