Running Ghana’s biggest referral hospital is no small task, especially when emergency wards get choked with patients from all corners of the country. The management of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital recently let out a loud cry for help regarding severe staff shortages.

According to the Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Yakubu Seidu Adam, many doctors working at the facility are trainees who finish their programs and leave. It becomes a revolving door where they come, get trained, and move on, leaving permanent gaps in critical care units.

The sixty-four bed Accident and Emergency Centre currently handles a massive daily influx of accident victims and emergency referrals. When these crucial facilities stretch beyond their normal limits, both patients and medical personnel suffer immense stress.

Bringing in more permanent medical officers and nurses will definitely strengthen intensive care services and guarantee timely treatment. Authorities must treat this urgent staffing appeal with the seriousness it truly deserves to protect human lives.
