The Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited, Adam Mutawakilu, has identified water theft as one of the major challenges facing the company.
According to Mutawakilu, the unauthorised use of water continues to create difficulties for the state-owned water utility as it works to provide reliable water supply to consumers.
“One of Ghana Water Ltd.’s major challenges is theft. People steal water a lot,” he said.
Water theft can occur through illegal connections, tampering with water meters or accessing the distribution network without proper authorisation.
Such practices can affect the company’s revenue and make it more difficult to manage water distribution and maintain infrastructure.
Revenue losses may also affect the resources available for maintaining pipelines, repairing damaged facilities and improving water supply services.
Water Theft and Its Impact on Consumers
Water theft can have consequences beyond the financial losses suffered by Ghana Water Limited.
Illegal connections and interference with pipelines can affect the efficient distribution of water, potentially contributing to supply challenges in some communities.
Consumers who pay their water bills may also be affected when unauthorised use places additional pressure on the distribution system.
Addressing the problem requires effective monitoring, enforcement of the relevant rules and public cooperation in reporting suspected illegal connections.
Call for Responsible Water Use
Mutawakilu’s comments highlight the importance of protecting water infrastructure and ensuring that consumers obtain water through authorised connections.
Preventing water theft could help Ghana Water Limited safeguard its revenue and strengthen its ability to provide services to households and businesses.
As demand for reliable water supply continues, tackling illegal connections and other forms of unauthorised water use remains an important challenge for the company.
