Accra Floods Force Insurance Companies to Pay Out Millions of Cedis in Claims

The heavy rains that hit the capital last week did more than just flood our streets, they also emptied the bank accounts of many homeowners and shop keepers. The Chartered Insurance Institute of Ghana (CIIG) has revealed that insurance companies are currently processing and paying out millions of Ghana cedis to cover damages caused by the disaster.

The massive scale of these payments shows how expensive changing weather patterns have become for our national economy. While a few smart individuals are getting financial relief, thousands of uninsured victims are left counting their losses alone in muddy rooms.

Speaking at the 2026 CIIG Conference held in Accra, the President of the institute, Solomon Lartey, explained that valid policy holders are already receiving their payouts smoothly. He noted that the recent flooding has exposed how vulnerable many local families are when they choose to save money by avoiding basic property insurance.

Lartey advised Ghanaian workers to always factor insurance premiums into their monthly business setup budgets rather than treating it as an unnecessary luxury. Spending a small amount of money on a monthly policy ensures that you do not lose your entire life savings when a heavy downpour overflows the main drains in your neighborhood.

The National Insurance Commission is also pushing local insurance firms to change how they treat ordinary customers during national emergencies. The Commissioner of Insurance, Dr. Abiba Zakariah, called on insurance managers to embrace modern digital technology to make the filing of flood claims incredibly fast and stress free.

The commissioner noted that customer expectations are changing rapidly across the country, and people will no longer tolerate long bureaucratic delays when their properties are ruined. Insurance companies must prove their trustworthiness by paying out funds quickly so that affected families can rebuild their lives with absolute dignity.

The high-level conference served as a major training ground for local insurance brokers, financial regulators, and risk managers to share new ways of expanding policy coverage to rural communities. The strategic event also saw the official induction of one hundred and thirty-two highly trained new members into the professional institute.

The fresh group includes one hundred and eleven associates and twenty-one fellows who are being deployed into the market to help ordinary Ghanaians understand complex financial policies. With climate related disasters becoming more frequent in West Africa, having educated professionals on the ground will help more market women protect their shops from unexpected weather hazards.
