Former Energy Minister Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko has criticized the growing influence of money in both politics and church leadership, describing it as a “shameful practice” that threatens commitment, devotion, and national progress.

Speaking to journalists after casting his vote in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primaries on Saturday, January 31, 2026, Agyarko said, “In our politics, decisions are increasingly driven by money. This is a troubling trend, not just in the NPP, but across the political spectrum in Ghana.”

He noted that the problem is not limited to politics. “In some churches, elders are being elected through financial influence. That is deeply concerning and must stop,” he added.

Calling for urgent reforms, Agyarko emphasized the need for strong checks and accountability. “We now have the chance to examine this issue and put in place measures to curb it. A healthy party and a healthy nation cannot function where money dictates decisions,” he said.

He warned that monetization undermines the values of sacrifice and dedication essential to both party and national development. “Serving a party is an act of commitment. Building a nation is an act of devotion. Once these are compromised by money, both the party and the nation suffer. Those who engage in this practice must be held accountable,” Agyarko explained.

The NPP presidential primary is expected to see over 211,000 delegates participate. Five candidates are contesting for the party’s flagbearer position:

  • Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia
  • Former Minister for Food and Agriculture Dr. Bryan Acheampong
  • Former Minister of Education Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum
  • Former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong
  • Former MP for Assin Central Kennedy Agyapong
