AngloGold Ashanti Gives Obuasi Big Health Boost

Good news has hit the mining communities of Obuasi as primary healthcare just got a massive multi-million cedi upgrade. AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine has officially handed over two brand-new, modern health centers to residents in the Ashanti Region.

The mining giant invested nearly 6.8 million Ghana cedis into these infrastructure projects to expand medical access for thousands of ordinary citizens. This major intervention forms part of the corporate entity’s long-term promise to improve the lives of the people living directly within its host communities.

The first major project is the newly inaugurated Apitikooko Health Centre and Staff Quarters, which cost a whopping 4.08 million Ghana cedis to construct. Before this facility opened its doors on Thursday, July 9, 2026, sick residents had to endure long, painful journeys to get basic treatment.

AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Managing Director Samuel Boakye Pobee explained that the new center will directly serve Apitikooko, Asratoase, Kankanfrase, Apitiso 1, and Apitiso 2. Sick mothers and elderly citizens in these villages will no longer need to travel over 16 kilometers just to see a qualified doctor or nurse.

Dokyiwa and Binsere Get Their Own Modern Health Facilities

The mining company did not stop at Apitikooko, they also simultaneously commissioned the Dokyiwa/Binsere Health Centre to cover adjacent mining neighborhoods. This second facility ensures that surrounding communities now have clean, dedicated labor wards and emergency rooms sitting right at their doorsteps.

Building these clinics closer to the people helps take the heavy pressure off the main over-congested municipal hospitals in Obuasi town. Local leaders are heavily celebrating this development, noting that having a well-equipped clinic nearby will drastically reduce preventable child delivery complications in the district.

These newly commissioned health facilities are not random emergency donations from the mining firm. They are part of a well-calculated corporate strategy called the 10-Year Socio-Economic Development Plan (SEDP), which the company launched back in 2022.

The long-term development framework ensures that gold mining profits are directly reinvested into durable public infrastructure like schools, clean water systems, and clinics. By planning ten years ahead, the company is helping build an independent local economy that can comfortably survive long after the gold deposits are completely mined out.

While AngloGold Ashanti handles the heavy lifting of building the structures, the daily running of the clinics falls on the Ghana Health Service. The Obuasi Municipal Assembly has promised to deploy qualified medical staff, essential drugs, and nurses to the facilities immediately.

Local community leaders have also urged residents to adopt a strict maintenance culture so these beautiful buildings do not deteriorate like other state properties. This successful public-private partnership proves that when mining companies work hand-in-hand with local authorities, ordinary Ghanaians win big.
