The global music community woke up to very shocking news that hit us all hard like trotro brakes.British Ghanaian rapper Derek Andrew Safo, popularly known as Sway DaSafo, has passed away at the age of forty-four.
Reports confirmed that the legendary artist died at his home right here in Ghana.Just days before his sudden death, he marked his forty-fourth birthday surrounded by loved ones and well wishers.Tributes are pouring in from all corners of the world because his pen game was simply out of this world.
Breaking records without a major label
Back in two thousand and five, Sway did something that nobody thought was ever possible in the music industry.As a fully independent artist without any major record label backing or debut album, he won the Best Hip Hop Act at the MOBO Awards.He competed directly against heavyweights like 50 Cent and The Game and still took home the prestigious plaque.
That massive achievement changed how the world looked at British hip hop and opened doors for many young artists coming up.He proved that raw talent and hard work can break through any barrier if you stay true to your craft.
Crafting timeless hits and building legends
His debut album titled This Is My Demo dropped in two thousand and six and earned a prestigious Mercury Prize nomination.Tracks like Little Derek and Still Speedin showed his unique ability to switch flows effortlessly on any beat.Aside from making his own monster hits, he also played a big role in mentoring other bright talents.He helped shape the early career of internet sensation and musician KSI, proving he was a true leader.Collaborating with global stars like Ed Sheeran and Akon cemented his status as a master of the game.
Coping with the deep loss in Ghana
Losing such a creative genius so early in life leaves a very bitter pill in our mouths today.He leaves behind four wonderful children and a rich musical legacy that will live on forever.
