The legal landscape of Ghana experienced a massive shakeup when President John Dramani Mahama officially removed Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo from office.
This high-profile dismissal followed months of intense investigations and public petitions that captured massive attention across the country.
When a citizen named Daniel Ofori filed a petition citing stated misbehavior, the presidency had to activate the strict rules laid down in Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution.
A special five-member investigative committee chaired by Supreme Court Justice Gabriel Pwamang was promptly established to dig into the serious allegations.
The committee spent months reviewing evidence regarding how public resources and administrative powers were managed within the judicial service.
Investigators discovered that official funds were allegedly used to cover private travel expenses, which the panel termed avoidable and reckless financial dissipation.
Furthermore, the inquiry pointed out that certain administrative transfers and staff handlings breached constitutional provisions, tipping the scale into stated misbehavior.
Under Article 146(9) of Ghana’s constitution, the president is legally bound to act directly on the final recommendations submitted by such an investigative body.
Because the committee recommended her removal, President Mahama had no constitutional choice left other than to execute the warrant ending her tenure.
This historic event marks a major turning point for the Ghanaian judiciary, reminding every public office holder to uphold transparency and strict accountability.
