It was a night of terror on the Accra-Kumasi highway. Late Thursday, armed robbers ambushed a VIP Jeoun coach, leaving five people—including the driver and his mate—with serious gunshot injuries.
The attack happened around 11:00 p.m., somewhere between Apedwa Junction and Akyem Asafo. The robbers weren’t messing around. They used a vehicle to completely block the road, trapping three commercial buses like sitting ducks. When the VIP coach heading from Accra to Sunyani tried to navigate the blockade, the robbers opened fire.

Bullets shattered the peace of the night, hitting the driver, his assistant, and three innocent passengers. The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals, with the brave driver needing specialised care at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra.
Thankfully, the Suhum Divisional Police Command responded swiftly. They engaged the armed men in a fierce gun battle, forcing the cowards to retreat into the darkness. The police then cleared the road, bringing some calm back to the highway.
But the nightmare wasn’t over. Just two hours later, around 1:00 a.m., another VIP bus was attacked at Potrikrom on the Kumasi-Sunyani stretch. They fired at the bus, smashing the windscreen. But this time, an armed police escort on board wasn’t having it. He returned fire, sending the attackers running for the hills before they could rob anyone.
It’s scary out there, but VIP Jeoun has assured passengers they are still committed to safe travels despite these senseless attacks.
We need stronger highway patrols before travelling by night becomes a game of Russian roulette. Stay safe out there, folks!
