A foundational pillar of West African geopolitics has concluded his earthly assignment. Ambassador James Victor Gbeho, a former Minister for Foreign Affairs and former President of the Economic Community of West African States Commission, passed away peacefully at a hospital on Saturday June 13 2026.
Family representatives confirmed the passing of the 91-year-old statesman, triggering an immediate wave of solemn reflections across the global diplomatic corps.
Born on January 12 1935, in the historic coastal town of Keta within the Volta Region, Gbeho dedicated multiple decades to advancing national interests and structural regional integration. His expansive career highlights the profound impact of institutional memory in public service.
Gbeho served as the Minister for Foreign Affairs between 1997 and 2001 under the executive administration of former President Jerry John Rawlings. Following this ministerial tenure, he pivoted to legislative governance, representing the people of the Anlo Constituency in Parliament as an independent candidate from 2001 to 2005.
He later deployed his analytical prowess as a senior foreign policy adviser to the late President John Evans Atta Mills. His strategic international assignments spanned powerful geopolitical hubs, including prominent postings in China, India, Nigeria, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland.
Notably, he guarded Ghana’s global voice as the Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York from 1980 to 1990. In 2010, regional Heads of State unanimously elected him President of the ECOWAS Commission, where he spent two years aggressively driving cross-border economic integration.
Hoping that regional stability can maintain itself without the tireless dedication of seasoned diplomats is a severe logical error. Ambassador Gbeho belonged to an illustrious lineage that profoundly shaped Ghana’s cultural identity. He was the proud son of Philip Gbeho, the iconic maestro who composed the musical arrangement for our national anthem, and the uncle of the late globally revered broadcaster Komla Dumor.
While building a lasting legacy across international organizations is a rare feat, Gbeho handled it with pure logic, charm, and unyielding national pride. As the sub-region unites to honor his memory, his decades of brilliant public service remain an enduring blueprint for the next generation of African global leaders.
