Ghana Traffic Rules 2026: New L.I. 2519 Penalties

Ghana has stepped up road safety games with the introduction of the new Road Traffic Regulations, 2026, known as L.I. 2519. If you think you can anyhow drive or walk on our streets and go free, you better think twice before the police catch you. The law covers everyone including private motorists, commercial drivers, Okada riders, passengers, and even pedestrians walking on the street. Knowing these rules will save your pocket from heavy court fines and keep your driver license safe from unnecessary suspension.

Essential Driving and Traffic Offenses

1. Using a mobile phone while driving under Regulation 132 attracts a fine of up to 50 penalty units, imprisonment for up to three months, or both.

2. Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs under Regulation 131 attracts a fine of 50 to 200 penalty units, imprisonment for up to 40 months, or both.

3. Jumping a red light under Regulation 222 at a signalised intersection attracts a fine of 10 to 30 penalty units, imprisonment for up to 30 days, or both.

4. Failing to stop or yield at stop signs and pedestrian crossings under Regulation 222 attracts 10 to 30 penalty units, imprisonment for up to 30 days, or both.

5. Street racing and drag racing under Regulation 221 on unauthorised roads attracts 10 to 25 penalty units, imprisonment for up to 30 days, or both.

6. Speeding or failing to slow down in dangerous conditions under Regulations 212 and 213 attracts 50 to 100 penalty units, imprisonment for three to six months, or both.

7. Breaking railway crossing rules under Regulation 223 by ignoring closed barriers attracts 5 to 25 penalty units, imprisonment for up to 30 days, or both.

8. Overtaking a vehicle stopped at a pedestrian crossing under Regulation 224 attracts 10 to 25 penalty units, imprisonment for up to 30 days, or both.

9. Disobeying traffic control officers or devices under Regulation 226 attracts a fine of 10 to 25 penalty units, imprisonment for up to 30 days, or both.

10. Failing to wear or fit a seat belt under Regulation 144 attracts a fine of 10 to 50 penalty units, imprisonment for up to eight months, or both.

Vehicle Safety and Commercial Transport Rules

11. Riding a motorcycle without a helmet or reflective clothing under Regulation 109 attracts 25 to 50 penalty units, imprisonment for one to three months, or both.

12. Driving without warning triangles or approved warning devices under Regulation 108 attracts 25 to 50 penalty units, imprisonment for 30 days to three months, or both.

13. Driving with a tinted front windscreen under Regulation 92 attracts 25 to 50 penalty units, imprisonment for one to three months, or both.

14. Using unsafe, worn-out, or expired tyres under Regulation 87 attracts 25 to 50 penalty units, imprisonment for 30 days to three months, or both.

15. Driving without a fire extinguisher and first-aid kit under Regulation 94 attracts a fine of 10 to 25 penalty units, imprisonment for up to 30 days, or both.

16. Overloading a motor vehicle under Regulation 118 attracts 25 to 50 penalty units, imprisonment for up to three months, or both.

17. Operating commercial motorcycles or tricycles without required licenses under the framework attracts 50 to 100 penalty units, imprisonment for 8 to 24 months, or both.

18. Overcharging passengers above approved ministry fares under Regulation 180 attracts 10 to 25 penalty units, imprisonment for up to 30 days, or both.

19. Stopping or parking buses and taxis outside designated areas under Regulation 231 attracts 10 to 25 penalty units, imprisonment for up to 30 days, or both.

20. Boarding or alighting from a vehicle at unauthorised places under Regulation 204 attracts a fine of up to five penalty units, imprisonment for up to seven days, or both.

Pedestrians, Parking, and Roadside Conduct

21. Jaywalking and failing to use a footbridge under Regulation 203 attracts a fine of up to five penalty units, imprisonment for up to seven days, or both.

22. Improper parking near junctions or double parking under Regulations 228 and 235 attracts 10 to 25 penalty units, imprisonment for up to 30 days, or both.

23. Preaching or hawking in a moving public vehicle under Regulation 141 attracts 10 to 50 penalty units, imprisonment for up to eight months, or both.

24. Selling goods on roads and pedestrian walkways under Regulation 142 attracts a fine of up to 50 penalty units, imprisonment for up to three months, or both.

25. Washing or repairing a vehicle on the road under Regulation 139 attracts a fine of up to 25 penalty units, imprisonment for up to 30 days, or both.
